Respect and learn to control the boom. It's essential for smooth sailing and your own health and safety.

Odds are good that you'll learn in a small boat with a lightweight boom. Light, maybe, but it can still give you a whopping headache if you accidentally jibe and your head's in the way. The same goes if the wind dies, leaving the boom waving around.

If you are standing or crouching - and you should be sitting in a dinghy - even a small boom can knock you overboard if it catches you by surprise.

On a larger boat, a swinging boom can concuss or kill with a blow to the head, not to mention that it can send you flying right off the boat. Not a good situation for the solo sailor. If you're lucky, a kiss from a big boom will only cut or bruise you.
